Okinus is a nationwide provider of lease-purchase financing solutions, enabling consumers to acquire furniture, electronics, and other essential goods through affordable payment plans. The company offers point-of-sale financing options at checkout for online retailers, traditionally supporting platforms like WooCommerce and Shopify. To increase market penetration and broaden adoption, Okinus needed to expand its integration ecosystem to include additional e-commerce platforms such as BigCommerce and Magento.

What Was the Problem?

The Challenge

Despite its success in WooCommerce and Shopify environments, Okinus lacked native integration support for other popular e-commerce platforms, including BigCommerce and Magento 2. This limitation was directly impacting its ability to onboard new merchants and serve a broader retail market.

Missing Platform Coverage

Without plugins for BigCommerce and Magento 2, sales reps faced technical roadblocks when trying to close deals with merchants using these platforms.

Fragmented API Support

While the Okinus financing API was robust, it lacked platform-specific adapters, making implementation difficult and inconsistent across different merchant environments.

Scalability Limitations

The absence of centralized app infrastructure meant any non-Shopify/WooCommerce integration would require custom one-off work, which was not scalable.

Okinus needed scalable, reusable solutions that would allow merchants using Magento and BigCommerce to easily integrate financing options during checkout—without adding complexity to their store management.

How We Solved It

Our Approach & Solution

Nexus Box engineered two purpose-built solutions that allowed Okinus to offer seamless integration with both Magento 2 and BigCommerce, leveraging custom backend frameworks to support flexibility, security, and future scalability.

Custom Magento 2 Module (PHP)

For Magento 2 users, we developed a native PHP-based module that integrated directly into the checkout process. Key features included:

  • Secure API interactions with the Okinus financing engine
  • Embedded iframe and form logic to collect and verify consumer application data
  • Admin settings panel within Magento for easy merchant configuration
  • Status tracking for applications and financing approvals

This module was designed for ease of installation, full compatibility with Magento’s frontend theme system, and compliance with PCI and data-handling best practices.

BigCommerce Application (Node.js + Express.js)

To support BigCommerce, we created a standalone app built using Express.js and Node.js. This lightweight application acts as a middleware layer between BigCommerce store instances and Okinus’s financing API.

Features of the BigCommerce app included:

  • OAuth authentication with BigCommerce stores
  • Merchant-specific app management dashboard
  • Secure API proxying and signature validation
  • Webhook listeners for application status updates
  • Cross-store multi-tenant support for Okinus partner merchants

The app was deployed on scalable infrastructure, enabling Okinus to support multiple merchants without duplicating resources.

Unified API & Documentation Strategy

We documented both implementations with clear API specs, merchant setup guides, and internal developer documentation to support onboarding and scaling. This has laid the foundation for additional integrations (e.g., Wix, Shopware, Salesforce Commerce Cloud).
