Excelarace
Excelarace is a specialized platform focused on organizing and managing marathon and endurance racing events. The brand required a robust and scalable website to handle ticketing, participant registration, and logistics for major races and athletic events across the country. Built on Magento 2, their original site struggled to align traditional e-commerce logic with the unique flow of event registration, leading to a confusing customer experience.
What Was the Problem?
The Challenge
While Excelarace had chosen Magento 2 for its scalability and feature-rich framework, the platform was configured using a default e-commerce store structure—a format better suited for physical product sales than for race registrations. As a result, the following problems emerged:

Confusing Registration Flow
Customers were treated like product buyers instead of race participants, leading to unnecessary friction during the checkout process.

Lack of Participant-Specific Logic
The system lacked functionality for key race logistics such as:
- Automatic bib number assignments
- Collection of runner-specific data (e.g., age, emergency contact, gender, etc.)
- T-shirt size selection and association with each registrant

Manual Fulfillment and Ticketing
There was no automation in the backend to distribute race credentials or tickets after sign-up. Everything had to be handled manually by the event team, increasing the margin for error and slowing down operations.
Without a tailored experience, the system risked losing participants due to a poor user journey and inefficient internal processes.
How We Solved It
Our Approach & Solution
Nexus Box approached Excelarace’s challenges by transforming Magento from an e-commerce store into a purpose-built event registration engine.
User Experience Redesign for Event Registration
We completely re-architected the frontend and checkout experience to mimic a smooth, multi-step event registration flow rather than a generic shopping cart:
- Streamlined input forms tailored for race participants
- Removed unnecessary e-commerce fields irrelevant to registrations
- Designed a flow that gathered all key race data before checkout
Custom Registration Engine
We developed custom backend logic to support the unique requirements of race registration:
- Automatic Bib Number Generation: Each participant receives a bib number upon successful registration, using an incremental system that avoids conflicts.
- T-Shirt Size Handling: Sizes are tied to the participant’s record during registration and sent to fulfillment automatically.
- Runner Profile Management: Integrated participant-specific metadata like age group, gender, race category, and emergency contact info.
E-Ticket and Confirmation Automation
After checkout:
- Participants receive automated e-tickets delivered to their email, with bib numbers and race details included.
- The system sends registration data to event organizers in real time, ensuring they always have an up-to-date participant list.
This automation significantly reduced manual backend work and ensured a seamless experience from signup to race day.
